I have posted about the crisis in the court system and, before that, about the long gaps between court hearings in Bradford (in common with most other courts). Latest research shows that the average time for the disposal of divorce court financial applications has been steadily increasing, from 20.5 weeks at the start of 2015 to 24.9 weeks in April to June 2016. The government saw fit to increase the divorce “petition” fee, to £550 last year, despite the economic cost to the state being less than half that. Court fees up, service standard down. The state is a monopoly provider of the divorce process. No other monopoly provider would be allowed to behave this way. Mark Tattersall, partner at Chivers Walsh Family Law.
