The former wife of an oil and gas trader based in the Caucasus was recently awarded £453 million in financial remedy proceedings against him. The former wife had a high-powered legal team but the former husband seems to have been much more laid-back about the situation. He was not legally represented and chose to attend the hearing only by video-link from his yacht in the Caribbean. It would appear that the court was doubtful that the former husband would pay voluntarily because, among the assets that went to the former wife, was an Aston Martin car, which the court anticipated would be sold to provide a “fighting fund” for enforcement of the order through foreign courts.
